AMS getting new gym floor following water damage

Aledo Middle School will be getting a new gym floor following water damage that was caused by an overflowing toilet the day before school started.

The Aledo ISD board of trustees were presented information about the damage and the two bids received to replace the floor.

“We had a toilet overflow at the [Multi-Purpose Center], on the stage area, the day before school started. We tried to dry it out and did that through Sept. 13 or so and it got to the point where it reached as good as it was going to get,” AISD Chief Financial Officer Earl Husfeld said. “We called and formally filed an insurance claim and the insurance company came in and looked at it. Essentially, it buckled — the subfloor was wet — and the insurance company said we need to replace the section of the floor. We’re recommending to replace the entire gym floor because there roughly half that was damaged.”

The extent of the damage has made the gym unusable.

“The floor cannot be used right now,” AISD Superintendent Dr. Susan K. Bohn said. “We are having to have games at the [Daniel] Ninth Grade campus, so it’s not just that it doesn’t look nice or whatever, it is buckling and uneven so that it’s not safe for kids.”

AISD Director of Construction and Facilities Tyler Boswell said the water expanded the plywood under the floor.

“The damage is from the baseline all the way through the free-throw line and it’s about a two-inch ridge all the way down and it’s unplayable,” Boswell said. “The water went down on the side wall where the vents are, went under the subfloor and expanded the plywood that’s underneath there and once that plywood expands, you just can’t get it to lay back down.”

The district received two bids, one from Ponder Company, Inc. for an amount not to exceed $102,320 and one from Quality Hardwood Floors, Inc. for $108,050. The AISD board approved going with Ponder Company and will have the entire gym floor replaced and at least half of the subfloor.

“Due to the age of the floor, we’re recommending Ponder Company and to replace the entire floor, we think that would be the better long-term value for the district. If the bond election were to be successful, then we would have a new gym at AMS plus new gym floor at the middle school No. 2, so we thought this would be an opportunity to just replace the floor,” Husfeld said. “We would use the little over $58,000 of the insurance proceeds once we submit the claim and get the depreciation back, and then the [remaining] balance we would take that out of currently budgeted funds that we have within the district budget.”

Boswell said they really won’t know about the subfloor until the company tears up the gym flooring.

“The unknown is the subfloor and how far that water damage went underneath. We just don’t know until we get it apart and once we get it apart, that’s what that not to exceed number is for, to cover us in case we need to do more,” Boswell said. “The other nice thing is that the current type of floor that’s in there now has an expansion every 10 boards. The new systems have expansion in every board, so that if you do have a future repair, you can attack that differently.”

Boswell added that Ponder Company was the one that originally put the gym floor in at Aledo Middle School.

As for the toilet, Boswell said they came up with an idea that would help with the issue.

“There’s two dressing rooms on the stage for drama and basically the toilet was used by an adult and just overflowed and continued to run and we couldn’t get the water shutoff,” Boswell said. “So, I think what we’re suggesting is to go in and put a hand-valve that’s convenient for anybody to shut the water off. It just continued to run and run, before we could get down there and it ran right off the stage, down the steps and under the floor. It was just an unexpected deal [and] it was a pretty nice floor all things considered.”

The gym is expected to be complete by Dec. 1 at the latest.

“Right now volleyball is able to practice on one end, but basketball practice will start fairly soon and obviously we’ll work to improve that Dec. 1 deadline,” Boswell said. “But I know they have a plan to work through practices.”
